Growing Opportunities in Northern Uganda's Agricultural Markets
When women-led enterprises gain access to markets, the impact goes beyond sales. It builds confidence, visibility and new pathways for growth.
Through the Women Economic Empowerment for the Green Transformation (WEEG) under the Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Programme (UWEP), 18 MSEs and women’s groups participated in the Northern Uganda Agricultural Trade Show in Gulu.
Expanding market access remains a core pillar of the WEEG-UWEP Project being implemented by GOPA Worldwide Consultants on behalf of GIZ under the Employment Promotion for Women for the Green Transition in Africa (WE4D) programme in partnership with the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, and funded with support from the government of European Union, Germany, Norway governments.
The Northern Uganda Agricultural Trade Show created practical opportunities for learning, exchange and collaboration. From conversations at exhibition booths to insights on sustainable agriculture, the experience reflected how dynamic and fast-evolving the sector is.
The results were encouraging. The groups generated approximately EUR 508 (UGX 2,179,000) in sales through direct engagement and improved product visibility. They also established new connections with partners and customers, opening doors to previously untapped markets, while gaining valuable insights into farmer needs, competitor strategies and innovative practices.
As Auma Gloria of Lwala Widow’s Women Group in Aromo Subcounty, Lira District, shared: “The 5th Northern Uganda Agricultural Trade Show has been a powerful learning experience for us. We’ve gained valuable insights into honey product packaging, branding and financial record-keeping. We are excited to return home and apply these lessons to strengthen our competitiveness in the market.”
Beyond the numbers, the energy and collaboration was a standout at the event. It is a clear reminder that agriculture in Northern Uganda continues to grow stronger through shared effort.
