Agriculture and food systems
Sustainable and resilient agricultural practices and food systems are essential for securing food, improving nutrition, and protecting the environment for future generations. They ensure the supply of nutritious food, support rural livelihoods, and drive economic growth, all while facing the pressures of a growing global population and the uncertainties brought about by climate change.
Climate change brings severe droughts, unpredictable rainfall, and rising temperatures, threatening crop and livestock yields and increasing the need for efficient resource management. Ensuring food safety and security requires robust systems for production, distribution, and monitoring. Combating malnutrition demands a focus on the availability of and access to balanced diets. Farmers and agribusinesses must adapt to changing consumer demands, integrate new technologies, and navigate complex market environments. Supporting farmers’ organisations, improving infrastructure, and building technical and managerial capacity are critical to overcome these challenges.
GOPA works with institutions to addresses these challenges with flexibility, efficiency, global expertise and field experience. Our approach to crop and livestock production centers on resilience and sustainability, utilizing optimized techniques, sustainable water and soil management, and an efficient use of resources to increase productivity and lower costs. We focus on validating and scaling up innovations in fruits, nuts, greenhouse vegetables, and dairy, while implementing integrated crop-livestock systems based on Conservation Agriculture principles.
Furthermore, we apply principles of agroecology, climate-smart agriculture, and smart farming by working with our clients to promote regenerative, agroecological and organic farming, innovative practices, and stakeholder dialogue to enhance food security, protect biodiversity, and improve the quality of produce. We provide tailored capacity building to farmers’ organisations, strengthening their technical and managerial skills to address needs and deliver services. In smart farming, we integrate ICT solutions—such as remote sensing, GPS, and robotics—to optimise production, connect farmers to markets, and drive innovation in efficiency and sustainability.
Our work in food and nutrition security follows the FAO’s pillars: food availability, access to food, food use, and stability. We provide technical assistance and policy guidance to support agricultural system development, rural resilience, and improved maternal and child nutrition.
Our vision is to foster a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable agricultural future where environmentally friendly practices, market-oriented growth, and technological innovation ensure food security and prosperity for all. We strive to promote sustainable agriculture and food systems, building a better tomorrow.
