Territorial approach to adaptation to climate change in the North-East of Kenya

The main purpose of the project is to secure livelihoods of pastoralists, agro-pastoralists and settled inhabitants in the arid and semi-arid north-east and to improve food security and resilience against the effects of climate change through the development and implementation of mid- to long term adaption-strategies.

The project implements capacity building in the following four fields of activity:

  1. Context-sensitive resource management adapted to climate change (sustainable pasture and water resource management)
  2. Increased yield and income in agricultural production and along agro-based value chains.
  3. Increased value of local fish production on Lake Turkana
  4. Creation of adapted livestock marketing structures

Job Description:

Major tasks of the team leader will be:

  • Development and implementation of adapted concepts and interventions and strategy planning in the areas of Sustainable Natural Resource Management (NRM), livestock marketing, fisheries and value chains - mainly in form of Human Capacity Development (HCD).
  • Support to partners in the implementation of (pilot) activities with target groups in the field of NRM, livestock marketing, fisheries, irrigation, value chain development.
  • Networking building and cooperation with private actors, NGOs and (agricultural) research centers.
  • Qualification of counterparts in organisational and strategy development, regional planning, water, NRM, food security and pastoral life forms - in form of HCD.
  • Planning, management and monitoring of the project, including the management of short term experts;
  • Active participation in overall program development, management and steering;
  • Coordination with partners and stakeholders;
  • Procurement management;
  • Documentation and reporting.
Qualifications: 
  • Long term experience (at least 10 years) in international development in the field of rural development, adoption to climate change in arid and semi-arid regions with a focus on at least two out of the four fields of activity mentioned above.
  • Working experience in Northern Kenya, preferably in Turkana- and/or Masabit counties with a strong understanding of the local context (socio-cultural challenges and conflicts) is required
  • Willingness to travel and work in rural arid regions is essential and the expert should preferably have work experience with German technical/financial cooperation projects
  • General qualifications are a university degree in agriculture, ecology, animal husbandry, water management, geography or similar. Fluent English is required, German and Kiswahili are considered an asset

The Team Leader will be supported by 2 national long term experts and a limited number of short term experts

2,5 years with a possible second phase of an additional 2 years
