Malawi_Technical Assistance to “AFIKEPO” Nutrition Programme

The aim of Afikepo Nutrition Programme in Malawi is to enhance nutrition security of the targeted groups in 10 selected districts through: increased and diversified dietary intake of safe and nutritious foods; increased use of enhanced nutrition knowledge and awareness and hygiene practices; and strengthened multi-sectoral governance of nutrition at all levels. The proposed contract will provide professional and technical services supporting the Government of Malawi to implement Afikepo Programme interventions in these districts.

The technical team will work in partnership with the Department of Nutrition, HIV and AIDS (DNHA) and other relevant stakeholders involved or associated with implementation of Afikepo. This will include providing technical cooperation to: support the Government in day-to-day management and implementation of the multi-annual programme estimate, coordination and monitoring of contracts by other implementing partners and support capacity development and strengthening of nutrition sector Ministries and structures to ensure smooth and effective implementation of activities and achieve programme's intended objectives as contained in the logical framework.

Responsibilities:

The team leader’s role will comprise at least the following aspects:

 Steering and Stakeholder Management:

  • Coordinate all technical assistance interventions to ensure synergies across key tasks and alignment with EU/EDF needs and processes
  • Overall responsibility to provide professional and technical services to support the Government of Malawi to implement interventions of Afikepo Nutrition Programme in Malawi.
  • Ensure timely reporting to EU
Qualifications: 

Required Expertise:

  • Project Management
  • EU Team Leading / project management experience
  • Knowledge of EU (including EDF) procedures
  • Development of project management frameworks and continuous monitoring and evaluations of the project implementation
  • Review of project conceptual frameworks to identify key inputs, processes, outputs and impact
  • Experience managing project in sub-Saharan Africa

 Education:

  • Post graduate degree in health or agriculture/food security preferably with focus on nutrition and food security.

 Professional experience:

  • 10-15 years of experience in management of projects in similar areas of nutrition and food security
  • Demonstrated working experience in projects and programmes, supported by the international community in the areas of nutrition and food security and related public health topics in countries of Southern Africa, ideally also in Malawi
  • Significant experience in managing teams and coordinating inputs from a range of technical specialists and areas of expertise
  • Proven experience in the implementation of similar nutrition projects covering at least the following areas - (Programme Coordination and Capacity Development; Nutrition M&E/MIS and Nutrition Education and Communication)
  • Knowledge and understanding of different models of capacity building
  • Excellent interpersonal skills required for high level strategic engagement with ministries, departments and agencies, development partners and other stakeholders and in multicultural work environments
  • Outstanding influencing skills and able to work sensitively and effectively at multiple levels with partners from across the government and the Development Partner and following a collaborative and flexible approach with an ability to develop strong working relationships
  • Good writing and presentation skills, and ability to communicate effectively to diverse audiences
