Ethiopia_Support EU-Coffee Action for Ethiopia (EU-CAfE)

This activity is designed to support smallholder coffee producers, processors, traders and their organisations to improve: productivity; quality with focus on specialty and traceable coffees; value chain development; and trade transparency through public-private-partnership dialogues to increase income shares of stakeholders and to enable Ethiopia to gain more from coffee trade. Also meant to pilot the registration of some Ethiopian coffees through Geographic Indications (GIs); install and operationalise information technology systems; and establish interactive extension management and market information systems.

Project's expected outputs are:

  1. improved extension services delivery for increased productivity, quality and processing;
  2. improved farmers' access to high quality inputs and technologies;
  3. increased availability of processing and grading capabilities for high quality coffees and increased flow ofmarket information;
  4. integration of innovative solutions and technologies from research for higher yield and high quality;
  5. establish and capacitate functional strategic public-private stakeholders' coordination and dialogue platforms;and
  6. strengthening the federal and regional coffee authorities' planning and management capacities for proper project implementation and compliance to requirements of EU financed grant contracts (operational and financial).
Qualifications: 

Senior coffee Agronomist and Extension specialist fully conversant in EU/EDF procedures 

Qualifications & Skills

  • At least first degree from accredited university; preferably MSc or equivalent in coffee agronomy (best agronomic practices), extension systems (beat extension practices), Geography or Environmental Sciences
  • In depth understanding of EU /EDF procedures that qualifies to provide support and capacity building on operational and financial management of EU Action Grants including procurement procedures
  • Fluent in English (writing, speaking understanding)
  • Motivated, focused, hardworking and eager to learn
  • Able to work independently, flexibly and responsively

General professional experience:

  • A  minimum of 8 years hand-on experience in supporting coffee agronomy, extension and / or value chain development undertakings, of which 4 years are in coffee growing countries;
  • Proven experience in supporting establishment of grassroots level agribusiness organizational arrangements to enhance coffee productivity, quality and marketing
  • Proven understanding of the GI protocol development for agricultural products
  • Proven experience in developing and / or establishing workable agricultural extension systems
  • Proven experience in assisting EU financed Actions grants und the EDF financial instrument
  • Strong presentation & writing skills
  • Strong computer skills, including MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Excellent administrative, reporting and communication skills
  • Strong ability to adapt to changing working conditions, prioritize and meet deadlines

Specific professional experience

  • Work experience in best agronomic and extension communication practices and value chain development including marketing
  • Experience in farm level agribusiness collective organizational arrangements
  • Experience in GI protocol development for agricultural products
  • In depth understanding of EU/EDF procedures to support and build capacities of beneficiaries in operational and financial management of EU Action Grants including procurement procedures
  • Proven experience to guide agricultural baseline data collection analysis and compilation
  • Strong aptitude for using MS office Suite in particular MS Excel
  • Detail-oriented, ability to work in a team environment and plan and deliver training in the areas of good agronomic practices, good extension practices and EDF procedures as applied to Action Grant
  • A robust design analytical and quantitative skill

 

Start / Duration: 

The project office is based at the head quarter of ECTDMA in Addis Ababa and is implemented in 28 Woredas of Oromia, SNNP and Amhara regions as well as Jimma Agricultural research Centre (JARC) and affiliated sub-centers including regional and federal agricultural research centers doing research on coffee in collaboration with co-applicants. In addition to the TA teams main office in Addis Ababa, there will be satellite offices at the head offices of the beneficiary regions and JARC, as deemed necessary.

The intended start date is January 06, 2020 and the period of implementation of the contract will be 42 months from this date.
