Ethiopia_Support EU-Coffee Action for Ethiopia (EU-CAfE)

This activity is designed to support smallholder coffee producers, processors, traders and their organisations to improve: productivity; quality with focus on specialty and traceable coffees; value chain development; and trade transparency through public-private-partnership dialogues to increase income shares of stakeholders and to enable Ethiopia to gain more from coffee trade. Also meant to pilot the registration of some Ethiopian coffees through Geographic Indications (GIs); install and operationalise information technology systems; and establish interactive extension management and market information systems.

Project's expected outputs are:

  1. improved extension services delivery for increased productivity, quality and processing;
  2. improved farmers' access to high quality inputs and technologies;
  3. increased availability of processing and grading capabilities for high quality coffees and increased flow ofmarket information;
  4. integration of innovative solutions and technologies from research for higher yield and high quality;
  5. establish and capacitate functional strategic public-private stakeholders' coordination and dialogue platforms;and
  6. strengthening the federal and regional coffee authorities' planning and management capacities for proper project implementation and compliance to requirements of EU financed grant contracts (operational and financial).
Qualifications: 

Qualifications & Skills

  • At least first degree from accredited university; preferably MA. MSc, or equivalent in Geographic Information System (GIS), IS/IT, Geography, or environmental Science and a certificate and strong aptitude in GIS and other related information sciences to help develop a user friendly web based interactive coffee statistics database and coffee extension system
  • Knowledge of farm level Agribusiness management solutions to facilitate famers’ use of such solutions for enhanced performance
  • Fluent in English (writing, speaking, understanding)
  • Motivated, focused, hardworking, and eager to learn
  • Abel to work independently, flexibly and responsively

General professional experience

  • A minimum of 10 years hands-on experience in developing and/ or guiding use of IT / GIS / GI system and farm level agribusiness solutions for agri-business in development country context;
  • Strong presentation & writing skills
  • Strong computer skills, including MS word, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Excellent administrative, reporting, and communication skills
  • Strong ability to adapt to changing working conditions, prioritize and meet deadlines

Specific professional experience

  • Experience working with Geographic Information System (GIS) software, web GIS and geodatabase management applications products suite, preferably with ArcGIS Desktop with §D Analyst & Spatial Analyst Extensions, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Server (including SDE database connections) and other GIS software such as Google Earth, Surfer software
  • Experience in GI system development for agricultural products
  • Experience in guiding farm level adoption of agribusiness management solutions
  • Experience in web-based interactive database and extension system development
  • Experience with Trimble software products suite, preferably with TerraSync and Pathfinder Office/Positions
  • Strong aptitude for using MS office Suite, in particular Excel
  • Detail-oriented, ability to work in a team environment and assist with training as needed
  • A demonstrated design, analytical and quantitative skills
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a variety of office and specialized equipment in performance of job tasks, including GPS, computers and peripherals such as plotters, printers and scanners
  • Experience in design management and implementation of agricultural monitoring and geospatial-based projects and programs
Start / Duration: 

The project office is based at the head quarter of ECTDMA in Addis Ababa and is implemented in 28 Woredas of Oromia, SNNP and Amhara regions as well as Jimma Agricultural research Centre (JARC) and affiliated sub-centers including regional and federal agricultural research centers doing research on coffee in collaboration with co-applicants. In addition to the TA teams main office in Addis Ababa, there will be satellite offices at the head offices of the beneficiary regions and JARC, as deemed necessary.

The intended start date is January 06, 2020 and the period of implementation of the contract will be 42 months from this date.
